Performance marketers: this series is for you. Practical guides to the setup, signals and strategy behind stronger Peak Season campaigns.

Peak season has a way of exposing the cracks in your campaign setup. You can have the right creative, the right media strategy and the right budget behind you – but if your campaigns aren't built on strong data signals, performance can start to suffer when it matters most.

The good news is that a lot of these issues can be spotted (and fixed) before budgets ramp up.

TikTok campaigns perform best when they have accurate, connected signals to learn from. That means making sure your conversion tracking, Pixel, Events API, product catalog and event setup are working together to give campaigns the information they need to find and convert the right customers.

To help advertisers get Peak-ready, we've broken down four fundamentals that consistently support stronger-performing commerce campaigns: data foundations, automation, creative and measurement.

First up: the foundation – building the data setup that helps TikTok understand customer actions and optimise towards the outcomes you care about.

Why Peak season makes campaign setup even more important

A weak data foundation becomes more costly when demand increases.

Peak season brings:

  • higher spend

  • increased competition

  • shorter optimisation windows

The same setup gaps that might go unnoticed during quieter periods can become significant performance barriers when campaigns need to scale quickly.

Advertisers with high-quality data foundations see 24% lower CPA than those running on incomplete setups [1]. That's why getting your conversion tracking and data signals right before demand rises is one of the highest-leverage actions you can take.

What makes a strong TikTok campaign foundation?

At its core, a strong campaign foundation comes down to the quality of your conversion tracking setup.

For commerce advertisers, five areas are essential:

  • Pixel and/or Events API connected

  • Full-funnel events firing correctly (View Content, Add to Cart, Purchase, at minimum)

  • Product catalog uploaded and current

  • Advanced Matching enabled

  • 70%+ event-to-catalog match rate

Together, these signals help TikTok build a clearer understanding of shopper behaviour and optimise campaign delivery more effectively.

TikTok Pixel vs Events API: should you use both?

TikTok Pixel and Events API both help advertisers send conversion data to TikTok, but they work differently.

Pixel is a browser-based connection and is often the easiest starting point, particularly for advertisers using partner integrations or with limited technical resources.

Events API is a server-to-server connection that provides stronger resilience and more control over data sharing, especially where browser restrictions or signal loss can affect tracking.

Where possible, running both together creates the strongest foundation. Mirroring events across both connections and using event_ID for deduplication helps avoid double-counting while giving TikTok more reliable signals to optimise against.

Which TikTok events should commerce advertisers prioritise?

For ecommerce campaigns, conversion tracking should cover the full customer journey – from initial interest through to purchase.

A typical event hierarchy looks like:

For Smart+ Catalog Ads specifically, the minimum required events are:

  • View Content

  • Add to Cart

  • Purchase / Complete Payment

Across key funnel events, ensure content_id is being passed correctly. For Purchase events, include value and currency to provide TikTok with the information needed to optimise effectively.

Combined with a 70%+ event-to-catalog match rate, these signals create a stronger foundation for campaign performance.

TikTok campaign setup checklist: what to check before Peak

Think of your setup as a pre-flight check before increasing budgets. Work through each component of your setup and ask a simple question: if this broke tomorrow, would I know?

The most common issues advertisers uncover are surprisingly fixable:

Low event-to-catalog match rate?

Check whether content_id is being passed across View Content, Add to Cart and Purchase events, and whether those IDs match your catalog SKU_ID exactly.

If content_id is missing, incomplete or inconsistent, TikTok cannot reliably connect shopper actions with products.

Events not firing correctly?

Validate your key events in Events Manager before campaigns launch.

Check that:

  • the correct event names are being used

  • events are firing on the right pages

  • required parameters are being passed

  • duplicate events are not being counted

Small issues are much easier to fix before campaigns enter the learning phase.

Catalog issues?

Your product catalog should be:

  • complete

  • refreshed regularly

  • aligned with current pricing and availability

  • using the same product IDs as your event data

During Peak, outdated products or mismatched IDs can quickly impact performance.

Event names look correct but data is missing?

Check for spelling or formatting errors. For example, 'View_Content' instead of 'ViewContent' means TikTok receives the event but cannot process it correctly.

Recently updated your website or server-side setup?

Check whether your Pixel or Events API connection is still active. A setup that was previously complete can break after site updates, and if it's been inactive for more than 14 days it will need to be reviewed and reconnected via TikTok Events Manager.

Build the foundation before scaling

The strongest Peak campaigns are built weeks before budgets increase – starting with a data setup that gives TikTok's systems everything they need to learn quickly and optimise effectively.

Getting your Pixel, Events API, catalog and conversion tracking in good shape before demand rises is one of the highest-leverage things you can do – and it's more straightforward to fix now than mid-campaign.
