TikTok Ad Awards Winner 2025: Greatest TikTok
A TikTok-first campaign that transformed a viral moment into a cohesive brand universe for Duolingo, delivering strong reach and engagement through platform lore.

Duolingo has a clear ambition on TikTok: to hack pop culture, embed itself within niche communities, and spark attention where users actively create and share cultural memes.
Central to this strategy is Duo the Owl, the app's iconic owl mascot, who is positioned as a persistent persona across Duolingo's content and a consistent source of conversation.
Under its campaign, Mit der Cult Mass (Cult Mass), Duolingo set out to elevate its ongoing brand lore to the next level. The objective was to create serialized brand entertainment that extended beyond individual clips with the goal of strengthening cultural relevance and delivering strong upper-funnel performance through a TikTok-first creative approach.
The Cult Mass campaign was built around a moment of cultural momentum. After Duo's death went viral and many brands jumped on the trend, Duolingo extended the narrative by reviving Duo and reimagining Duo as a cult leader.
Drawing inspiration from pop culture references such as the 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut, the Cult Mass campaign connected Duolingo's app mechanics with symbolic storytelling. Streak punishment became a ritual, buff minions emerged as cult followers, and Duo took on the role of high priest, allowing product logic and brand humor to merge naturally into the story.
Duolingo adopted a TikTok-first approach, combining immersive POV content with cinematic scenes and TikTok native assets. Paid amplification through Spark Ads scaled the most resonant content, ensuring reach was driven by assets already embraced by the community rather than traditional ad formats.
The Cult Mass campaign delivered outstanding upper funnel results for Duolingo, generating 34.83 million impressions and reaching 26.89 million users across Germany. Engagement was also strong, with 4.55 million total interactions and an engagement rate of 12.63%, significantly outperforming industry benchmarks.
Reactions stood out as a key signal of cultural impact, with 3.84 million reactions indicating that users were not just watching but actively participating in the narrative. Compared with previous campaigns, the use of more radical, iconic creatives significantly increased conversation, emotional response, and community involvement.
Together, these results demonstrate how a TikTok-first approach, built on lore, cultural references, and creator-ready storytelling, can turn platform culture into scalable attention and deep engagement.
