When a fantastically unique and unexpected video lands on your FYP, it almost seems like the hands of fate have plucked a gift from obscurity and placed it right into the palm of your hands. Well, it's not fate – it's the FYP Pull.

Often termed "mythical", "legendary" or "epic", the FYP Pull describes the random, surprising and delightfully weird content that unexpectedly appears on the FYP. If you want to learn more about this type of content and how your brand can tap into it to drive salience with your target audience, let the hands of fate guide you through this blog post.

Trend Signal Spotlight: Digital Escapism

To understand the FYP Pull trend, first we need to talk about the wider Trend Signal it's part of: Digital Escapism. We've evolved from feeling like we have a duty to curate a perfect version of ourselves on digital platforms. Now, particularly with TikTok's focus on authenticity and relatability, users are gravitating towards pleasantly surprising, uplifting and supportive content, making TikTok a creative escape driven by optimism.

The FYP Pull favours unhinged creativity – take the Legend of the Puchaina, for example. This trend began in 2020 with a viral TikTok video where a woman discusses avocados and humorously mispronounces "potassium" as "pataxio". This sparked the creation of the potaxies, a community using humour and irreverence to combat sexism and homophobia online. The Puchaina – an anthropomorphised avocado – emerged as their striking mascot and symbol, representing their playful rebellion against toxic internet culture. Here's an example of retail brand Lidl's take on this trend.

Another example of this is the Symphony Trend Moment, a meme-based trend that triggered the revival of 2017 Clean Bandit song "Symphony". This trend usually features a chaotically positive static image made up of graphics of dolphins and other sea creatures, rainbows and sunsets, set to the song "Symphony" and overlaid with text. A creator later recorded a vocal of her singing the song, which expanded and remixed the trend. See how Jacquemus and Currys (below) jumped on this trend.

Brand take: How Desigual leveraged TikTok trends

Clothing brand Desigual successfully rebranded by leveraging TikTok trends, diversifying its content to connect with its target audience. By embracing popular challenges, memes, aesthetics, collaborations with creators and unexpected moments, Desigual tapped into the platform’s creativity, making its brand more relatable and relevant in the fast-evolving digital landscape.
