Story Selection is an Interactive Add-on product that provides a story-selection function for in-feed ads and lets audiences choose the next video that they want to watch. Story Selection helps audiences further engage with a brand as it goes beyond just promoting information or selling a product, it can also be entertaining on its own. The Add-on presents audiences with two interactive hotspots, each branching into a different version of a creative’s story depending on what the audience selects.

Entertainment industry

In attractive or suspenseful episodes, advertisers can provide audiences with two different choices of episode outcomes or characters. Allowing audiences to bring themselves into the plot and choose a plot or character to explore the different outcomes as well as enrich their user experience on TikTok through their own Story Selection.

Campaign scenario

Announcement of a new product, movie launch, or exposure of the current product, movie, festivals, etc.


Gaming industry

In interesting game scenarios, advertisers can offer the audience a choice of two different game characters or game scenarios. Allowing the audience to bring themselves into the game scenario and explore different game scenarios and enrich the game experience on TikTok through their own Story Selection.

Announcement of new product or game launch or exposure of current games, characters, functions, etc.

In the product-related short videos, the audience can click to select different product or SKU images to learn more about the product or compare them with two different videos. How to set up Story Selection in TikTok Ads Manager

  1. In TikTok Ads Manager, create a new campaign and configure settings for Campaign and Ad Group.

  2. Select objective among Reach (Reach & Frequency and Auction), 6-second Focused View, Traffic, or App Promotions (if the account has been allowlisted for access).

  1. In Ad details, upload creatives and configure ad captions.

    • Please note the video you upload or choose here is the main video of the Story Selection. You can upload it either by choosing from the Asset library or pulling it as Spark Ads.

  2. Click the Create button under the Interactive Add-on option.

  3. Select Premium add-on and go to Story Selection.

  4. You must upload Sub-Video A and Sub-Video B respectively and fill in the Story Selection topic.

    • Note: In the previous step, you uploaded and chose your image.

    • Sub-videos must be uploaded, and can not be selected from the asset library or pulled from the organic video.

    • For the sub-video cover image, you can choose to use the first frame of video or upload the custom cover image. Advertisers could choose to upload the sub-video cover image by themselves, or they can choose the default cover image. By choosing to use the default cover image, the platform will automatically set the 1st frame as the sub-video cover image.

  5. Verify Story Selection is set up correctly using the ad preview tool and submit the ad when finished.
